Morning Wake-up Exercise: 3 Flexibility Stretches to Alleviate Stiffness

Gentle Morning Awakening: Just a Chair Is Enough

Waking up in the morning, feeling like your body is locked? Shoulders tight, back sore, even getting out of bed feels difficult. Don't worry, today we only share a simple and safe little movement—something you can do while sitting on a chair. It's the first step in three morning stretches: Seated Spinal Twist. No mat, no need to change clothes, and even no need to stand up. Let your body slowly awaken, loosen up the joints, and unblock the meridians.

Seated Spinal Twist: Release the "Lock" in Your Back

💡 Applicable Physical Issues

Morning stiffness in the lower back and shoulders, neck tension, inflexible spine, feeling like a board. This exercise is designed for you.

🧘 How to Perform the Movement (Detailed Steps)

  • Step 1: Preparation — Find a stable chair with a backrest. Sit so that your hips are toward the front, sitting on the front 1/3 of the seat. Feet firmly on the ground, knees together or spaced as wide as your hips. Place your hands gently on your thighs.
  • Step 2: Inhale — Keep your back straight, and let your head extend upward, feeling your spine lengthen. Imagine a string gently lifting your head up.
  • Step 3: Exhale and Twist — Slowly turn your body from the lower abdomen to the right. First, turn your lower back, then your chest, and finally your head. Place your left hand on the outside of your right knee, and your right hand gently grasp the backrest or edge of the seat. Don't pull forcefully; keep it gentle.
  • Step 4: Maintain Breathing — Stay in the twisted position for 5–8 breaths. With each inhale, further straighten your spine, and with each exhale, slightly deepen the twist. Feel the stretch on your right waist and thigh.
  • Step 5: Return and Switch Sides — Inhale slowly back to the center, then exhale and turn to the left, repeating the same steps.

✨ Benefits for the Body

This movement gently massages your spine and abdominal organs, promoting blood circulation between the vertebrae, and improving morning stiffness and hunchback. It also stimulates the Bladder Meridian and Kidney Meridian on your back, helping your body eliminate the "turbid qi" accumulated overnight, making you feel more energetic. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, "twisting the waist and spine" can activate the joints and muscles, promote blood circulation, and align with the rhythm of rising yang energy in the morning.

Summary: Start with a Small Movement, Enjoy Balance Between Activity and Rest

Morning is the time when your body needs the most gentle care. Don't rush into intense exercise; try this spinal twist on a chair. After a few days of practice, you'll find getting up less difficult, and bending down to tie your shoes becomes easier. The other two stretches (standing forward bend and side stretch) are equally simple and effective—we'll talk about them next time. Remember: exercise doesn't have to be complicated. Moving every day is more important than moving for a long time once.
