Why Does Sitting for Long Periods Cause Back and Waist Pain?
Have you been sitting in front of a computer for several hours every day, and is your back and waist getting stiffer? Do your shoulders feel like they're carrying a stone, and your legs are swollen? Don't worry, this is normal. Our bodies need movement, and blood needs to circulate. When you stay still for too long, the meridians become like clogged pipes, and pain comes. Today, I'll share a simple trick that doesn't require leaving your chair or any equipment, helping you to relax your muscles, unblock the meridians, and prevent pain.

A Chair, One Movement: Gentle Spinal Twist
This movement is called "Seated Spinal Twist," combining the twisting of Tai Chi and the relaxation concept of Baduanjin. It's especially suitable for people who sit for long periods, gently stimulating the meridians around the entire spine, helping blood circulation and relieving back and waist pain.
How to Do It? Four Steps to Complete Easily
- Step 1: Sit on the front third of the chair, feet flat on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Place your hands naturally on your thighs. Breathe deeply three times, feeling your body relax.
- Step 2: Slowly inhale while raising both hands to the chest, palms facing each other, as if hugging a ball. Imagine drawing fresh air into your chest.
- Step 3: Slowly exhale while twisting your body from the waist to the right. Place your right hand on the edge of the chair back, and gently place your left hand on the outer side of your right thigh. Don't force it; twist to a comfortable position. Hold this position, breathing naturally for five times (about 30 seconds).
- Step 4: Inhale slowly and return to the center. Then repeat the steps on the left side. Do three rounds on each side, totaling about five minutes.
What Changes Will You Notice After Doing It?
This simple twisting movement gently stretches the muscles and ligaments on both sides of the spine, allowing compressed intervertebral discs to relax. At the same time, it stimulates the Bladder Meridian on the back and the Belt Meridian at the waist—two meridians in traditional Chinese medicine that govern body detoxification and blood circulation. After doing it, you will feel warmth spreading through your back, your shoulders and neck will be lighter, and your breathing will be smoother. This is the feeling of "moving qi and blood." Doing it daily can help improve posture and prevent pelvic tilt and hunchback caused by prolonged sitting.
Tip: Follow Nature, Balance Movement and Stillness
When performing this movement, remember to coordinate with your breathing and move slowly. Don't pursue the range of motion; comfort is the most important. Like how plants grow gradually in nature, our bodies also need gentle care. You can also do it while drinking water or answering the phone, making exercise a habit.
Remember, exercise is to make your body feel better, not to punish yourself. Spend a few minutes each day, and "prolonged sitting" won't be scary anymore.
Summary: Sitting stretching to prevent aches doesn't require complicated equipment or strong physical strength. With just a chair and one twist, combined with breathing, you can relax your muscles and unblock meridians. Let the blood flow, and aches will naturally leave you. Try it now!
