Bedtime Stretch: A Simple Chair Twist to Help You Relax and Sleep Well

Bedtime Stretch: Say Goodbye to Stiffness and Fall Asleep Easily

After a busy day, both your body and mind are exhausted. Lying in bed, tossing and turning, you feel very tired but can't fall asleep? This might mean your body isn't ready for rest yet. Traditional Chinese health practices tell us that doing some gentle stretching before bedtime can help to loosen the joints, unblock meridians, and promote blood circulation, allowing your body and mind to gradually calm down. Today, I'll share a very simple technique - spinal twist on a chair. It requires no equipment and can be done at home, and it's completely safe for middle-aged and elderly people.

Spinal Twist on a Chair: Loosen Joints and Aid Sleep

Who is this exercise suitable for?

If you have any of the following conditions, this bedtime stretch will be particularly effective:

  • Sitting for long periods during the day, with sore and stiff back and waist
  • High stress, nervous tension, and difficulty relaxing
  • Lying in bed at night, but your body remains tense

How to do it? Step by step

Find a stable chair (without wheels), sit on the front part of the chair, place both feet flat on the ground, and keep your shins perpendicular to the floor. Place your hands naturally on your knees.

  • Step 1: Inhale to Prepare — Breathe in slowly while gently extending your spine, as if being pulled upward by a string from the top of your head. Let your shoulders drop and slightly tuck your chin.
  • Step 2: Exhale and Twist — Breathe out slowly, starting from your lower back, and twist your body to the left. Hold the outer side of your left knee with your right hand, and support the left side of the chair back or your left thigh with your left hand. Keep your eyes looking straight ahead or slightly to the left rear, without over-turning your head.
  • Step 3: Maintain Breathing — Stay in this position for 3 to 5 breaths (about 20 to 30 seconds). With each inhale, feel your spine lengthening, and with each exhale, feel the twist deepening slightly. Your body should feel a gentle stretch, not pain.
  • Step 4: Return to Center and Switch Sides — Breathe in slowly, return your body to the center, and relax. Then repeat the same method to twist to the right, maintaining the same duration.

The Benefits of This Exercise

This simple bedtime stretch effectively relaxes the muscles on both sides of the spine, improves the flexibility of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It gently massages the internal organs of the abdomen, promotes blood circulation, and helps the brain switch from "work mode" to "rest mode." According to traditional Chinese medicine, twisting can "unblock meridians," allowing energy (qi) to flow smoothly, thus achieving a balance between movement and stillness. Doing 2 to 3 sets of this twist every night, you will feel your body becoming more flexible and your mood calmer.
