Why Gentle Stretching in the Morning?
After a good night's sleep, the body often feels stiff, especially the spine and shoulders. This is not because of aging, but due to staying in one position for a long time, which slows down the flow of qi and blood. Like a plant that needs sunlight, our bodies also need a gentle awakening. Morning stretching is not intense exercise, but a gentle conversation - allowing joints to move slowly and meridians to gradually become unblocked. Today, I share a very simple movement that requires only a chair, is suitable for beginners and the elderly, and is safe and effective.
Technique: Seated Spinal Twist
Applicable Issues

After waking up, you may feel stiffness in your back and waist, tension in your shoulders, discomfort in your neck, or a feeling that your body is "stuck." This movement specifically targets the spine and sides of the waist, helping to loosen the bones and muscles, and unblock the bladder and gallbladder meridians.
Movement Steps
- Step 1: Sit Steadily Find a sturdy chair without wheels. Sit on the front third of the chair, with both feet flat on the ground, hip-width apart. Place your hands naturally on your thighs, keep your back straight, but do not stiffen it.
- Step 2: Inhale to Prepare Breathe in slowly, imagining the flow of air rising from the soles of your feet to the top of your head, feeling your spine lengthening. Relax your shoulders and slightly tuck your chin.
- Step 3: Exhale and Twist Slowly exhale and gently turn your upper body to the left. Place your right hand on the outside of your left thigh, and your left hand on the back of the chair or your left thigh. Do not force it, but let your breath guide the twist. Keep your pelvis stable, and only rotate your thoracic spine and neck.
- Step 4: Hold and Breathe In this position, take 3-5 deep breaths. With each inhale, imagine your spine lengthening upward; with each exhale, feel the twist becoming deeper. Do not force it, just stay comfortable.
- Step 5: Repeat on the Other Side Slowly return to the center, then turn to the right, using the same method. Perform 3-5 times on each side.
Physical Benefits

This movement imitates the principle of "twisting a towel" in traditional Chinese medicine - by gently twisting, it compresses and relaxes the muscles on both sides of the spine, promoting the flow of blood and lymph. It effectively relieves morning stiffness in the back and waist, improves posture, and makes the shoulders and neck feel more relaxed. After practicing for a week, you will feel that getting up every day becomes less strenuous, and your overall energy and spirit will improve.
Summary

Morning stretching is not a task, but a gift you give to your body. Spend a few minutes doing a gentle twist, follow the yang energy that rises in the morning, and let the qi and blood gradually flow. Balance between movement and stillness, don't pursue intensity, just focus on comfort. Practice daily, and you will fall in love with this way of awakening your body.
