Introduction
Did you feel your lower back sore and stiff after sitting all day? Don't worry, no need to get up or use a yoga mat. Just this chair under your bottom. Today, I share a simple and safe stretching exercise specifically designed for people who sit for long periods—no back pain, no effort, and it can gradually improve your back health. Remember one concept: movement generates yang energy, while stillness brings vitality. Moving too forcefully may harm your muscles. We aim for gentle stretching, allowing the qi and blood to circulate slowly.

Applicable Physical Issues
This exercise mainly targets lower back stiffness, soreness, and unilateral lumbar muscle tension caused by prolonged sitting. Whether you are an office worker, a parent taking care of children at home, or even elderly people in their sixties or seventies, as long as you can sit steadily on a chair, you can try it.
Technique Details: Seated Spinal Rotation
Step 1: Preparation Posture
Find a hard-backed chair (not a swivel chair or a soft sofa). Sit on the front third of the chair, with both feet flat on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Keep your back naturally straight but not tensed. Place your hands gently on your thighs, slightly tuck your chin, and look straight ahead. Take three deep breaths: inhale, feeling your spine stretch upward; exhale, letting your shoulders relax and sink down.
Step 2: Right Hand on Left Knee, Body Turns Left
Breathe in slowly, and as you exhale, gently place your right hand on the outer side of your left knee (if turning to the left). Your left hand naturally reaches behind to grasp the back of the chair or rests on your lower back. Note: don't pull your knee with force, just lightly guide the direction. As you exhale, slowly rotate your upper body to the left from your waist—like wringing a towel, but not just turning your neck, you should feel each vertebra rotating. Stop at a comfortable position (without forcing, about seeing a little bit of the back of your left shoulder), and maintain natural breathing. Hold for three deep breaths (about 15-20 seconds), feeling a gentle stretch on the left side of your lower back.
Step 3: Deepen Slightly with Breathing
On the last exhalation, you can try to turn a little more, about 1 cm, but without any pain. Mentally repeat: the flow of energy passes through your lower back, like a stream washing away the stiff points. Inhale, slightly return your body to the center, and exhale, slowly turn again. Repeat 2-3 times, each time deepening slightly.
Step 4: Repeat on the Other Side
Return to the center, and similarly place your left hand on your right knee, turning your body to the right. Maintain the same duration. After completing both sides, sit upright, gently sway your lower back, and feel your entire spine becoming more flexible.
Physical Improvement Effects
This exercise gently activates the muscles and tendons on both sides of the lumbar spine, relieving local stiffness caused by prolonged fixed postures. Traditional Chinese medicine often says "blockage leads to pain." Rotating the spine is like giving your lower back an internal massage, helping to promote the circulation of qi and blood, and invigorating the joints and muscles. At the same time, combining deep breathing can also relax the intercostal muscles and diaphragm, enabling deeper breathing and making your whole body feel lighter.
Summary
If your back feels uncomfortable after sitting for a long time, don't rush to support your back or stretch forcefully. Try this seated rotation. Do 2-3 sets during work breaks, each set taking only one minute. It's effortless, doesn't hurt your back, yet helps you regain spinal flexibility. Remember to proceed gradually. Without movement, there's no vitality. Small movements nourish your back. Take it slow, and the joy of your body will return unnoticed.
