Introduction: Don't Let Prolonged Sitting Steal Your Flexibility
I know, you spend eight hours or more sitting in front of a computer every day. Your bottom feels stuck to the chair, your back starts to ache, and your neck becomes stiff. Don't worry, you don't need complicated equipment or long periods of exercise. Today, I'm sharing an extremely simple and beginner-friendly movement - the seated spinal twist. Just spend ten minutes every day, and you can get your body moving again, feeling the comfort of unblocked meridians and flowing qi and blood.

Techinique Details: Seated Spinal Twist
Applicable Issues
- Stiffness and soreness in the lower back after prolonged sitting
- Shoulder and neck tension, with popping sounds when turning the head
- Tightness in the hips and buttocks
- Wanting to improve posture and make the spine more flexible
How to Perform the Movement
You need a sturdy chair (preferably one without armrests). Sit on the front part of the chair, feet flat on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Gently place your hands on your thighs, and imagine your spine being gently pulled upward from the top of your head.
- Preparation: Inhale, lift your hands upward, feeling your chest open up.
- Twisting: Exhale, slowly turn your upper body to the right, place your left hand on the outside of your right knee, and gently rest your right hand on the right edge of the chair (or behind the backrest). Keep your chin parallel to your collarbone, and avoid over-rotating your head.
- Hold: Breathe evenly for 5 to 8 breaths. With each inhale, lengthen your spine, and with each exhale, gently deepen the twist. Feel a gentle stretch from your waist to your shoulders.
- Return to Center: Inhale, slowly bring your head back to center, and relax your arms. Take a breath to rest, then repeat on the left side. Do 3 to 5 rounds on each side, totaling about ten minutes.
Tip: Perform the movement slowly, do not pull forcefully. If you feel pain on one side, return slightly. Respect your body's sensations.
Benefits for the Body
This movement is like an "internal massage" for your spine. It gently stretches the muscles in your back, sides, and hips, helping the intervertebral discs receive nourishment and relieve stiffness caused by prolonged pressure. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, the twist stimulates the governing vessel and bladder meridian on the back, promoting circulation of qi and blood, allowing "qi" to flow smoothly. After practicing for a while, you will find that your lower back doesn't get tired as easily after sitting for long periods, your shoulders feel looser, and even walking feels lighter.
Summary: Small Movement, Big Change
You don't need to find extra time or go to the gym. Spend ten minutes before lunch or during afternoon breaks doing this chair twist, and you can feel your body's positive response. It's like pressing a "restart button" for your body - loosening your joints, unblocking meridians, helping you find balance between movement and stillness. Remember, consistency is more important than intensity. Try to make this a small habit, and your body will thank you.
