Five Stretches to Relax After Prolonged Sitting: Light Home Exercise to Keep Your Joints and Bones Active

Introduction

Do you suffer from back pain, soreness in your legs and numbness after sitting for a long time? Don't worry. You don't need to go to the gym or use any equipment. Just a chair and a little patience are all you need to complete a gentle stretching routine at home. Today, I share five simple exercises that help to activate your muscles, promote blood circulation, and restore a sense of physical ease. These exercises are suitable for everyone, even middle-aged and elderly individuals.

Five Simple Stretches to Relax, Light Home Exercise to Activate Your Muscles and Bones

First Move: Cat-Cow Stretch on the Chair

Sit upright, place your hands on your knees. Inhale while lifting your chest and head, exhale while arching your back and lowering your head, stretching your spine like a cat. Repeat eight times. This exercise relieves back stiffness caused by prolonged sitting and makes your spine more flexible.

Second Move: Seated Side Stretch

Sit on the front part of the chair, place your right foot on the ground, and rest your left foot on your right knee. Raise your right hand upwards, and gently bend your body to the right side, feeling the stretch on your left waist. Hold for three breaths, then switch sides. This helps to unblock the meridians on the side of your waist and reduce waist fatigue.

Third Move: Simple Leg Swings Forward and Backward

Hold onto the back of the chair and stand straight. Swing one leg forward and backward like a pendulum, keeping the movement small and comfortable. Do ten swings on each side. This exercise promotes blood circulation in the lower limbs and relieves the heaviness in your legs after prolonged sitting.

Fourth Move: Shoulder and Neck Circles

Sit straight, slowly move your shoulders forward in circles five times, then backward in circles five times. Then gently tilt your head left and right for a moment. This relaxes the shoulder and neck muscles and improves common neck stiffness among people who spend a lot of time looking down.

Fifth Move: Standing Backward Glance

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, hands on your hips. Inhale and slowly turn your body to the right, looking toward the right back, hold for two seconds; exhale and return to the center, then turn to the left. Do six times on each side. This move is similar to the "Cloud Hands" in Tai Chi, which rotates the entire spine and stretches your back and waist.

Summary

These five moves are simple and safe. Spend ten minutes each day doing them, and you can get your sedentary body moving again. Remember to perform the movements slowly, breathe naturally, and don't push yourself too hard. Movement generates yang energy, while stillness nourishes yin energy. Balance between movement and stillness is the foundation of health preservation.
