Introduction: Say Goodbye to Back and Waist Pain in 5 Minutes a Day
After sitting for a long time, does your back and waist feel stiff and sore? Don't worry, you don't need to go to the gym or use any equipment. Today, I share a very simple and gentle home core training tip - the chair twist stretch. This movement can relieve back and waist pain, and promote flexibility of the body, allowing you to find a moment of relaxation during a busy day. It is especially suitable for beginners and the elderly, safe and risk-free, and can be done anytime.
Tips in Detail: Spinal Twist on the Chair
Physical Issues This Exercise Is Suitable For
- Stiffness and soreness in the back and waist after prolonged sitting
- Decreased spinal flexibility, difficulty turning around
- Poor posture, hunchback
How to Perform the Movement

Find a sturdy chair and sit on the front third of it. Place both feet flat on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Place your hands naturally on your thighs. Breathe deeply, inhale while straightening your spine, feeling as if a string is pulling your head upward. Exhale and slowly twist your upper body to the right, with your right hand resting on the back of the chair and your left hand on the outer side of your right thigh. Look over your right shoulder, and hold for five deep breaths. Then return to the center and repeat on the other side.
Complete Steps
- Sit upright on the front of the chair, keep your spine neutral, and relax your shoulders.
- Inhale to extend your spine, exhale to twist.
- Keep breathing, don't hold your breath.
- Each twist should start from the waist, gradually moving up to the thoracic and cervical vertebrae.
- Perform 3-5 sets on each side, holding each set for 15-30 seconds.
Benefits for the Body

This movement gently stretches the muscles on both sides of the spine, promoting the meridians in the back and waist. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes that "if there is no blockage, there is no pain." By twisting, it can promote blood circulation, unblock the bladder and gallbladder meridians, and relieve back and waist tension. It also improves posture, making your sitting position more upright. With consistent practice, your back and waist will become increasingly relaxed.
Summary: Home Is the Best Gym

Core training doesn't have to involve big movements. Spend a few minutes each day doing this chair twist, combined with diaphragmatic breathing, and your back and waist can be gently stretched. Remember, balance between movement and stillness, follow nature, and don't force your body. Small movements, big results. Try it, and your body will thank you.
