Five Stretches to Relax After Prolonged Sitting: A Chair Twist to Relieve the Back and Waist

Introduction

After sitting for a long time, does your back feel stuck and sore? Don't worry, today I'm sharing a simple and comfortable stretching exercise - the chair twist. You don't need a mat or to change clothes, you can do it on an office chair or dining chair. This movement comes from the Chinese health concept of "activating the body's flexibility," helping your body regain its mobility and making you feel less tired even after a long day of sitting.

Five Stretches for Long Sitting: The Chair Twist

Tutorial: Chair Spinal Twist

Applicable Physical Issues

  • Stiffness and soreness in the back and waist after prolonged sitting
  • Shoulder and neck tension, difficulty turning the head
  • Felling like "curling up", with poor posture

How to Perform the Exercise (Beginner-Friendly)

1. Sit upright, feet flat on the floor, knees as wide as the hips. Place your hands gently on your thighs.

2. Inhale, feeling as if a string is gently pulling your head upward, lengthening your spine.

3. Exhale, slowly turn your upper body to the right. Place your left hand on the outside of your right knee, and your right hand behind the chair back (if you can't reach, placing it on your thigh is also fine).

4. Keep your abdomen slightly drawn in, with your chin parallel to your collarbone, not looking down. Hold for 3-5 deep breaths (each breath about 6 seconds).

5. Inhale to return to the center, then repeat on the left side.

Complete Steps

  • Step 1: Prepare position, adjust breathing.
  • Step 2: Twist to the right, maintain deep and long breathing.
  • Step 3: Slowly return to the center, take a rest breath.
  • Step 4: Twist to the left, maintain the same duration.
  • Step 5: After returning to the center, raise your hands above your head, then slowly lower them, feeling the relaxation of your body.

Physical Benefits

This movement gently twists the spine, similar to wringing out a towel, giving each vertebra a small amount of movement, promoting blood circulation in the back. Traditional Chinese medicine says "where there is flow, there is no pain." Regular practice can make your back feel warm and your shoulders and neck more relaxed. At the same time, it corrects rounded shoulders and hunched back caused by prolonged sitting, allowing deeper breathing and a calmer mind. Doing 3 sets on each side daily can help maintain the flexibility of your back and waist.

Summary

Stretching for long sitting doesn't have to be complicated. One move, the chair twist, can help your body activate the joints and muscles and unblock the meridians. Remember: perform the movements slowly, breathe deeply, like a spring breeze brushing through willow branches, gentle yet powerful. Spend a few minutes every day to bring your body back to a natural and relaxed state.
